DEPUTY DIRECTOR: TECHNICAL SUPPORT

(Ref ICT Infra/Dep Dir: Tech Supp/P5/June 11/st-3)

 

The qualifying incumbent must ensure

 

·         the responsibility for the management, planning, organisation, overseeing of technical support ICTs viz. computer facilities, internet and collaboration service operations, centralised corporate digital processing and hosting platforms, associated with administrative, change and configuration management, logistical and scientific systems of Unisa;

·          the responsibility for all the core processing platforms in the data centre (local and at regional offices) to ensure that service level agreements are met;

·         the managing and advising on operational performance ensuring capacity on installed core centralized digital systems such as Internet and collaboration services, and new developments in the ICT data centre arena;

·         that the disaster recovery planning and management form an integral part of this responsibility;

·         the management and coordination the following sections:

Ř  Servers and Operating Systems

Ř  Computer room operations

Ř  Academic Unix & Linux systems administration

Ř  Scientific systems administration

Ř  Regional offices server rooms

Ř  Change and configuration management (CCM)

Ř  Internet and collaboration services

 

 

Requirements

·         Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science or relevant Tertiary qualification

·         At least five years relevant experience in the computer industry plus a minimum of five years relevant management experience of: facilities; operations; systems management; CCM and Internet and collaboration service

·         Extensive knowledge and certifications of Unix and Linux operating systems

·         Knowledge of risk management and ability to plan and manage projects within deadlines

·         Must have strong negotiation, organizational and budget control skills

·         Must be an analytical and innovative thinker

·         Ability to work independently, as well as in a team with the transfer of skills and knowledge

·         Good interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)

·         Ability to work in a no-smoking area

·         Must be prepared to work outside of normal working hours as and when required

 

 

Recommendations

·         Experience in a Tertiary education environment

 

Duties 

·         Research, participate, manage, advise and implement with regard to strategic planning of computer facilities, systems, operations, CCM, internet and collaboration services, new technologies and policies and procedures

·         Maintain effective communication and collaboration on a departmental and institutional level

·         Ensure optimal management of resources in accordance with the university’s 2015 objectives and Open Distance Learning model

·         Support, develop and maintain the systems software operating systems

·         Manage, backup,  monitor and maintain the Technical support facilities software, systems, CCM, and internet and collaboration service

·         Develop and implement ICT’s business continuity solutions

·         Ensure effective Divisional Human Resources Management

 

     Assumption of duty : As soon as possible.    

Salary                           : Remuneration is commensurate with the seniority of the position
