The purpose of the job is
to facilitate
academic reading and writing in a range of contexts as part of academic
development programmes of the university, so as to contribute to region-wide
learner support and in particular, throughput imperatives.
Requirements
·
An honours degree in English Language
Education or Applied Linguistics
·
Minimum of two years’ prior experience
working in a developmental academic reading and writing programme in higher
education
·
A track record of involvement in strategies
to improve higher education student learning,
persistence and throughput through academic support
·
Demonstrated experience in working with
culturally-diverse student populations
·
An understanding of student challenges and
needs in a higher education environment
·
Documented experience in languages and
literacy materials development
·
Excellent written, oral and electronic
communication skills in English
·
Computer competency
Recommendations
·
Research experience in the field of language
teaching
·
A master’s qualification in English Language
Education or Applied Linguistics
Duties
·
Plan and offer one-on-one consultations and
workshops on academic reading and writing and learning to learn in different
modes through the medium of English
·
Initiate, design and pursue interventions
that promote the integration of language and content
·
Design and develop self study resources and
workshop materials such as handouts
·
Conduct research in the field of academic
language development
·
Contribute to institutional research to
assess student retention and throughput, and the impact of the Academic
Literacies Centres
·
Manage and administer the services and staff
of the academic reading and writing component of the Academic Literacies Centre
·
Promote the services of the Academic
Literacies Centre
Assumption of duty: As soon as possible
Salary: Remuneration is commensurate with the
seniority of the position
Working Hours: The incumbent will be expected to be on duty a number of hours on
weekdays and on Saturdays, subject to negotiation

Any
