SENIOR DATABASE SUPPORT SPECIALIST

 (Ref ICT Infra/Snr DbaseSuppSpec/P6/Jun11/st) 

 

The following measures are critically important as all of Unisa’s ICT systems which support various business processes, rely on data stored on the relevant databases.  The purpose of this position is to provide:

ü  Data analysis, installations, maintenance, access and support to all Unisa’s corporate databases and database infrastructures

ü  Upgrading, maintenance and support of system development tools, version control tools, report writers, management tools as well as Application systems and infrastructure required

ü  Research, implementations, maintenance and support of new technologies and software

ü  Information, assistance and technical support

 

Requirements

·         Bachelor of Science or B Tech Degree in Computer Science/Information Technology or equivalent discipline plus certification on a recent Microsoft SQL Server-Database Administration 2008 or Oracle certification: version 9 or 10 or 11

·         Six years experience as a Database Administrator of which three years experience must be in systems development and three years experience as an Oracle Application DBS (E-Business Suite) or three years experience in Microsoft SQL Server DBA 

·         Demonstrated, in-depth knowledge of database internals and data structures

·         Extensive knowledge of the following:

ü  Oracle RDBMS environments, Oracle E-business and Microsoft SQL Server databases

ü  SQL/SQL*Plus and PL/SQL and stored procedures/packages

ü  OEM/Oracle Grid

ü  Unix shell or Perl scripting languages, and

ü  Various generic business practices and process flow

·         Must have sound judgement and take the initiative to be an analytical and innovative thinker

·         Must have good interpersonal and communication skills with groups of diverse composition and complexity (Written and verbal)

·         Ability to supervise a team of database administrators

·         Ability to work independently as well as part of a team

·         Ability to handle frequent interruptions and shifting of concentration

·         Ability to work under pressure and outside of normal working hours as and when required

·         Must have own transport and cellphone

 

Recommendations

·      Oracle E-Business Suite certification or experience

·       Experience in setting up and maintaining a Disaster Recovery environment

 

Duties 

·         Provide software installations, implementation and support of all the databases and applications

·         Supervision, training and general administration of databases and applications

·         Comply with the required reporting and administration

·         Ensure effective communication with all team members

 

Assumption of duty      : As soon as possible    

Salary                           : Remuneration is commensurate with the seniority of the position
